Mini-split AC systems are ideal for homeowners who are looking for an effective way to cool their home without the need for traditional ducting. Many older homes simply don’t have ductwork. Attempting to install it after the fact is an expensive and invasive construction project where sections of walls and floors will need to undergo removal. Ductless mini-split units solve this problem as they don’t rely on ductwork to deliver cold air throughout the various rooms of your home.
Ductless AC systems work very similarly to traditional central air conditioning for cooling, except they don’t need ducts to distribute the cold air. They pull air in through their indoor air handler units and pass it over an evaporator coil. This coil has low-pressure refrigerant inside that absorbs heat from the air. The resulting cold air goes back to the rooms in your home, while the hot refrigerant goes to the outdoor condenser unit.
As it passes through the condenser coil in the outdoor unit, heat transfers out of the refrigerant and into the air outdoors. The cooled refrigerant travels back inside through an expansion valve that ensures its pressure drops so that it can absorb more heat from the air. This process happens over and over until your home gets down to your desired temperature setting. (They use this process in reverse to heat your home, too.)
One of the bigger advantages of ductless units is that they don’t have any cold air loss. Traditional ducted systems will lose some of the cold air that they produce through gaps and leaks in the ductwork. This causes central air conditioning systems to run longer so that an adequate amount of cold air can get to all the rooms in your home.
